THE GENDER THING

A young woman who is dear to me was fixing the front door closer at the restaurant the other day.  She returned to the bar offended that multiple incoming male guests asked her if she could use some help.  “I could build that f***** door” I remember being her response.

I get it, the offense–in assuming that had it been a male fixing the door, the help may not have been so readily available.  But it makes me wonder….should chivalry be dead?  And also, what about the spirit of generosity when it comes to accepting help, whether you need it or not?  It makes the helper feel good.  That can’t be a bad thing.

A mother was shopping the other day with her three children.  As she received her change from the checkout person, she turned and instructed the two boys to carry the bags.  The girl was told to take the bouquet of flowers.

I ask again, should chivalry be dead?

(A non-gender specific complimentary steak dinner goes to the best answer!)
