KEEP IT SIMPLE SCOTT
The August issue of Merrimack Valley Magazine’s deadline for copy was this week. My next column will be about great restaurants worth checking out, while traveling. The subject comes via a narrative about our recent visit to Chicago, to celebrate ANOTHER daughter’s graduation from college. Epic.
So, me and the editor (charged with keeping my columns correct and understandable) debated, as we do; This time over my phrase:
“…and don’t sleep on Wicker Park if you like to explore the fringe.”
He said that “sleeping” and “exploring” were opposite terms.
I explained that “don’t sleep on” means “don’t miss it”.
He said “Well, why don’t you just say THAT!”
I said, because my way is more “cool” and Wicker Park is…cool.
He said; “No one will get it”
I said “No one who is old may get it”
He said “Lots of old people read the magazine.” And, I think maybe he said also; “I’m old”
I said.. “Don’t you remember in the 70’s when people started saying “That’s bad”, when they meant it was good?””
And, he remained silent…knowing I would probably give in..eventually.
The idea is to not confuse people…to write simply, for the more simple or those reading fast or…normal people.
He has no easy task, making sure people know what I’m saying.
I get it. (SMH) Therein lies the key.
OK, Gotta dip.
