You have read here, about NYC’s The Meatball Shop (TMS) in the past. Their continued success, I imagine, will produce more locations–in addition to the three they have already. Such a unique–and perfectly executed concept, in so many ways. Wouldn’t I have loved to have thought of it!
So, I took a walk cross-town yesterday prior to kick-off, and spotted a new, assuming-knock-off concept called; “Meatball Obsession.”
Maybe “knock off” is unfair–I don’t mean to hate–and maybe the meatballs are amazing. I don’t know, I didn’t stop in. It felt wrong. But their website makes it seem as though they have been thinking about this concept since before Al Capone. Mama Leone. Anthony.
Not that TMS invented the meatball…but I figure they paved the way as a retail-restaurant-concept.
It’s the OBSESSION name that made me chuckle, more than the thought of “copy cat.” I can get with copying some rightgeous shit.
The name, however, goes on my list of, well, let’s say, names I wouldn’t. Though I admit that I am a little obsessed with TMS, for me it’s not all about the actual meatball, as great as they are.
Is anyone actually obsessed with meatballs? Intrigued, sure. A fan of? Indeed. Craving? Ok. But, “obsessed”?
My high regard for TMS is in the originality. And the spot-on execution. The attitude. The balls.
Maybe that’s the name I would go with if I had been the next-in-line naming guy. Simply, The Balls.
