Reading my weekly Sunday New York times magazine, I found a word I have been seeking, without knowing it, for a long time. Opacity. While reading the column On Photography by Teja Cole, he interprets the word as it relates to NYC born photographer, the late Roy DeCarava, as he discusses that artist’s style in shooting dark images, and specifically African Americans. Cole interprets the word’s meaning in his defining of DeCarava’s work, but references and credits it’s exploration and definition to French philosopher Edouard Glissant “as a right to not have to be understood on others’ terms, a right to be misunderstood if need be.” I feel better. I don’t expect you to understand.
