I mentioned past mentors in my Memorial Day post from one of my favorite places, Martha’s Vineyard. As I hiked towards ‘my’ ferry to get home from a short-but-great weekend–where I had “the best mussels ever” at Jimmy Seas–I started thinking of mentors that are still with us, and offering precious advice and gems of wisdom.
One of those is my wife Kathy–who has provided so many memorable perspectives through her years in business. My favorite–which she might have said about my blogging about the chef who still owes us money but is now opening his own restaurant without attempting to address our outstanding loan to him– “Take the high road, it’s less congested.”
She also once said, and still reminds me with regard to my oft tendancy to setting expectations too high– “People can only rise to their level of competence.”
Then, there’s Uncle Kenny–a great and successful guy who thinks just a bit deeper than most. His take? “People rise to the level of their incompetence.”.
Just sayin’.
Thank you for your sharing. I am worried that I lack creative ideas. It is your article that makes me full of hope. Thank you. But, I have a question, can you help me?
